CONTAINER TRANSPORT BY BARGE
Posted on 14.06.2021
Amco are pleased to announce they can now offer Container Transport by Barge service between Stockholm Norvik Port and the Port of Västerås. This unique inland waterway transport is efficient, reduces road pollution and congestions and provides what is now recognised in Sweden as the fifth mode of transport.
The service started on the 1st June 2021 and the Container Barge Shuttle Service carries the equivalent of around 208 TEU’s (Twenty-Foot Equivalent Unit). The barge is the EU class vessel Emelie Deymann which has a shallow keel and is 110 metres long. The sailing time is 15-hours and service began with two sailings a week.
This is the first inland waterway Cargo Barge Shuttle Service in Sweden and will reduce congestion on the road network in the region, as well as significantly reduce carbon dioxide emissions.
Stockholm Norvik Port is the container terminal located closest to the area that is by far Sweden’s largest consumer region. Stockholm Norvik has approach lanes closer to the open sea than any other port on the east coast.
The introduction of the new inland Shipping Shuttle Service provides the possibility to sustainably transport goods as close to their end destination as possible.
Anything that would fit into a TEU can be transported this way and so far, consumer and trade goods have been the first to benefit from this barge service. Goods have included clothing, footwear, electronics, smart phones, TV’s and furniture as well as manufacturing materials and components. Swedish export goods includes beverages, wood pulp, machinery and packaging materials being shipped in the opposite direction.
